Consumer Demand for Restaurant Kiosks on the Rise

Our CEO, Perse Faily, penned an article for Kiosk Marketplace discussing how and why consumer demand for restaurant kiosks is on the rise. The demand for kiosks is surely up, a fact that our latest Self-Service Kiosk Index proves: 25% of customers surveys reported using a self-service ordering kiosk at a restaurant in the last three months, up 7% from the previous year. A key driver for the demand for self-service options: lines at the counter.

“It's no surprise that long lines drive customers away…For restaurants in the fast casual and quick service categories, lunch and dinnertime rushes can be brutally busy. Kiosks expedite the ordering process, leading to shorter lines and happier customers.”

For today’s busy customer, a line length of even a few people is enough to deter them from your restaurant. Luckily, kiosks can solve this issue and help you avoid losing valuable guests – something we know at Tillster is important to any brand of every size.

Our research shows that once the line for a cashier reaches four people, customers prefer to order from a kiosk instead. In fact, if line lengths were equal, 30% of customers would still prefer to order from a self-service kiosk rather than a cashier at the counter.

“Still, worries about kiosk usability are common. But with partners who have tested and validated user experiences, positive outcomes can be readily achieved. Plenty of customers aren't afraid to try new technologies; in fact, they've already integrated them as part of their everyday lives. People are accustomed to having smartphones in their hands, and they're used to the convenience of online shopping. So, as long as the design is right, almost anyone who feels comfortable navigating a phone's home screen can use a kiosk with relative ease.”

However, it’s important to choose a kiosk partner, who can work with you to achieve your core KPIs and ensure that self-service ordering is the right investment for your individual brand and specific locations. In the appropriate settings, self-service kiosks can help your restaurant with line busting, optimizing customer experience, increasing the average check size through upselling and cross-selling and more.
